1. RE-GREENING AMONG FRIENDS |
Saturday 5 June is World Environment Day. What better time to make a small contribution towards planning a better environment here in Adelaide? |
On Saturday 5 June, you are invited to help us start off planning the re-greening of a small patch of bitumen within Bonython Park / Tulya Wardli (Park 27). |
The City Council has given us permission to start planning a re-greening project here, at the southern end of this temporary car park - directly opposite the Thebarton tram stop. |
|
|
What would you like to see at this location? We'd especially like to get involvement from Thebarton residents. On Saturday 5 June at 11am, we'll start by setting up a planning group. You are most welcome to be involved!. |
|
|
The planning group will seek advice from others before developing a re-greening plan to submit, later this year, to the Adelaide Park Lands Authority, for approval. Please come along next Saturday at 11am, if you'd like to help transform some bitumen into a park. |
This is a small first step towards our ambitions to restore lost Park Lands. As the Paul Kelly song says: ""From little things, big things grow". www.adelaide-parklands.asn.au/restore |

3. BUSINESS LEADERS URGED TO "LOVE YOUR PARK LANDS" |
On Friday, 21 May, the City Council, the Committee for Adelaide and other leading community and business groups came together at the Town Hall to map out an economic recovery plan for Adelaide's Central Business District. |
Ever since COVID emerged last year, many city businesses have continued to allow or encourage employees to work from-home. As a result, our city centre is quieter than it was pre-COVID. This includes your Park Lands which, according to Google "mobility data", in May 2021 had 13% fewer visitors compared to a "baseline" during school holidays in January 2020. |
Lord Mayor Sandy Verschoor wrapped up the forum, focussing on the opportunities presented by your Park Lands. The Lord Mayor told business leaders that the Adelaide Park Lands are this city's “top cultural strength", unique worldwide because Adelaide has the world’s only "City in a Park". |
|
|
| Without going into specifics, the Lord Mayor discussed ways to increase access to the Park Lands, and access through the Park Lands.. Her theme was consistent with APA's message to "Love Your Park Lands." |

How many times have you passed those stone beehives beside Sir Donald Bradman Drive and wondered about the story behind them? |
|
The stone sculptures, like sentinels on the outskirts of the city, make up a public art installation called ‘The Lie of the Land’. There are 25 of them in all, 11 on the north side of the road, on the edge of Ellis Park / Tampawardli (Park 24) and 14 on the south side of the road, in G.S Kingston Park / Wirrarninthi (Park 23). They appear small from a distance, but if you examine them closely you see that each sculpture is about 1.8m high. Built from a colourful variety of Kanmantoo stone, some are patterned with lines of ochre and red, others sparkle with mica, their dry-stone bodies blending beautifully with the native bushland that surrounds them. The Lie of the Land was commissioned to commemorate the centenary of Federation in 2001. Adelaide-born artist Aleks Danko and his partner Jude Walton chose the beehive shapes after being inspired by this 1858 drawing by Eugene von Guérard depicting Kaurna people camped in the area when Adelaide was first colonised by Europeans. |
|
|
While the Kaurna wurlies were made of grass, bark and eucalypt branches, Danko and Walton’s wurlies are not shelters as such. While they are presumably hollow, they don’t have doors. This means that they can’t be lived in, keeping with Colonel Light’s designation of the Park Lands as open, green, public land on which no dwellings should be built. Next time you are traveling along Sir Donald Bradman Drive, take a moment to admire these beautiful artworks that pay tribute to a way of life that existed on this land for millennia before the idea of a city surrounded by Park Lands was conceived. |
6. GUIDED WALKS PROGRAM CONTINUES THROUGH WINTER |
Rachael Mead and Shane Sody |
Cooler weather doesn't put off our Park Ambassadors, nor our Guided Walk participants. |
On Sunday 16 May, a group of twenty walkers traced a comprehensive loop into the gorgeous native bush land of Yam Daisy Park / Kantarilla (Park 3), through the dog-lovers’ paradise of Bragg Park / Ngampa Yarta (Park 5) and back to the hillock hiding one of Adelaide’s architectural treasures in Reservoir Park / Kangatilla (Park 4). |
This wonky triangle of three parks stretched between Prospect Road and Medindie Road, holds more fascinating secrets than their relatively small sizes might suggest. |
On Sunday 30 May, a similar-sized group enjoyed stunning sunshine for another Guided Walk, hosted by Park Ambassador Matt Jorgensen, in Ellis Park / Tampawardli (Park 24). |
One of the biggest surprises for most of the walkers was learning about the 1840's brick-lined water well that was built for the benefit of early European settlers and is stll preserved underneath one of the Park 24 playing fields |
To learn more about the 1840's well, see our story on Adelaide City Explorer. For details of Guided Walks coming up in June, see the 'What's On' segment below. |

8. PROGRESS ON VICTORIA PARK WETLANDS |
Construction work is ahead of schedule at the massive new wetlands project at the southern end of Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16). Soil is being stockpiled just north of the wetland location, next to Fullarton Road. This stockpile is temporary, enabling soil to be stored and sorted for reuse within the project or taken offsite. The stockpile area will be removed at the end of the construction works and the site reinstated to Park Land. |
100,000 new plants will be planted over the winter months It's estimated that the work will be finished before the end of the year. |
