We are a grassroots community organisation. We Explore, Inspire, Protect, and Restore. But we are only as strong as our Members; our Volunteers; and our Donors.
You are receiving the non-members version of this newsletter which means you're not (yet) a Member of our team, or perhaps a previous membership has expired. Will you help us? There are three ways to do that: as a Member, as a Volunteer or as a Donor. |
|
If you were to become an APA member, then you would then be able to book for any of our Guided Walks for free, and you would also unlock 15% discounts to all the merch in the APA Shop. More importantly, your membership fee (as low as $20 per year for a single concession) would be tangible support for our Park Lands strategies: Explore, Inspire, Protect and Restore. If you were to become a volunteer, there's a wide range of things you could do to help in one or more of our strategic activities. For example, - becoming a Park Ambassador; and/or
- writing stories for our blog and future editions of this newsletter.
Check out the full range of volunteer options here. |

6. MOTOR RACING NEAR WETLAND |
by Carla Caruso Park lovers have questioned why the State Government chose to return the Adelaide 500 car race to Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16) after award-winning biodiversity wetlands were created there. Birds and other wildlife have proliferated in the area since the $13 million, 3.2-hectare wetland was opened in the southern part of the Park in 2022.

12. IF A TREE FALLS IN A FOREST |
by Shane Sody Philosophers ask: "If a tree falls in a forest, and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?" We ask: "If the State Government cuts down dozens of trees in your Adelaide Park Lands, and there is NO MEDIA COVERAGE, does anybody know that it happened?"

| 14. CONGRATULATIONS, COUNCILLOR SNAPE |
APA Life Member and former APA Committee member, Councillor Keiran Snape has been elected by his fellow Councillors to serve as Adelaide's Deputy Lord Mayor for 12 months, throughout 2024. It's believed to be the first time that a current APA Member has held this position. Councillor Snape has been in the minorirty on Council, in voting consistently in favour of your Park Lands, most recently to protect Denise Norton Park / Pardipardinyilla from State Government chainsaws. On that occasion, as we reported last month, the Lord Mayor used her casting vote to break a tie, and authorise the Park attack. The Adelaide Park Lands Association congratulates Cr Snape on his elevation. |
15. RYMILL PARK KIOSK COMING BACK |
The kiosk in your Rymill Park/Murlawirrapurka (Park 14) has been vacant since April 2022. Since then, the City Council has been looking for a new tenant. It's now proposed a 21-year lease, which would involve upgrading the building. The City of Adelaide is inviting your comments, no later than Friday 15 December.
