The newly-elected City Council has called on the State Government to support a "long-term strategy" to restore lost areas of your Adelaide Park Lands.

The City Council has signalled it wants a pro-active strategy to prioritise support for your Open Green Public garland of Parks.

Last month’s re-zoning of Helen Mayo Park has fallen short of the Labor Government’s promise of “full protection”.

A large part of this Park is still at risk of being lost under new buildings of up to 20 storeys.

4. SCHOLARSHIP OFFER FOR PARK LANDS RESEARCH

The University of Adelaide Graduate Research school is offering scholarships for up to three postgraduate students to undertake PhD research on your Adelaide Park Lands.

Successful applicants will undertake research in one of three different areas:

the history of Park Lands losses over the years;
biodiversity within selected areas of your Park Lands, or
media; researching, writing and co-producing an authoritative documentary video, placing the Adelaide Park Lands in a world context.

The Adelaide Park Lands Association has four Park Lands strategies:

Explore, Inspire, Protect and Restore.

But we are only as strong as our members. To be effective at these strategies, we need YOUR support.

7. ART PRIZE Q &A

Have you been thinking about entering the Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize, but still not sure? Do you have some questions about it?

As the closing date for entries approaches (31 January) we've had lots of questions thrown up. So we've answered all of them in a 42-minute Q&A session, recorded live on Instagram on 15 December.

Martin Shub from Art-Prizes.com puts the hard questions to our Adelaide Park Lands Art Prize convenor, Nataliya Dikovskaya (aka Sard).

8. IT MAKES NO SENSE

From almost every perspective it simply makes no sense to build the New Women's and Children's Hospital in your Park Lands.

It would make sense to embed it within the city, not least because with a price tag of $3.2 billion it would have the best chance of growing Adelaide's economy.

9. COGNITIVE DISSONANCE ON TREE CANOPY

Cognitive dissonance is a mental conflict that occurs when your actions and beliefs are at odds with each other. You believe something, but act as if you don't believe it.

A Labor-controlled Parliamentary Committee has started looking at how "to improve the resilience and longevity of trees comprising the urban forest."

But will the Committee look at the actions of the Labor State Government?

10. FEDERAL EPA TO PROTECT?

Your Adelaide Park Lands are listed as a National Heritage place, but until now that has afforded them zero protection from a stream of State Government assaults.

However, Federal Environment Minister Tanya Plibersek has signalled that might be about to change, under a proposed new Federal Environment Protection Agency.

13. SWITCHING TO HUMANITIX

We've switched our ticketing agency, for Park Lands Guided Walks and other events.

We've switched from EventBrite and we are now using Humanitix instead, for all events in 2023. Why?

Humanitix is based in Australia, it has a lower fee structure, and donates its profits to children's charities.
