1. YOU'LL LOSE MORE, FOR LONGER |
by Shane Sody Next spring and summer, your opportunities to enjoy Open, Green, Public Park Lands with family and friends will be restricted more than ever by Premier, Peter Malinauskas. Over 2024-25, the Premier is planning to take even more of your eastern Park Lands for an even longer period than ever before, to cater for a four-day taxpayer-subsidised festival of carbon emission motor racing.

2. KAURNA VOICES - CULTURAL MAPPING |
The City of Adelaide has created a resource to celebrate Kaurna culture through personal stories, and research highlighting the significance of the Adelaide Park Lands. A new interactive map explores many of the Kaurna peoples' sacred connections to the land and features the experiences and events that have occurred from early colonisation times.

3. WHAT BIRD IS THAT? - EASTERN SPINEBILL |
by Nicholas Munday Your Adelaide Park Lands are home to many kinds of birds, but it’s not always easy to identify them. This month, in our What Bird is That? series, Nicholas Munday puts the spotlight on the eastern spinebill.

5. TEAM MEMBER MISSING. YOU! |
We are a grassroots community organisation. We Explore, Inspire, Protect, and Restore. But we are only as strong as our Members; our Volunteers; and our Donors.
You are receiving the non-members version of this newsletter which means you're not (yet) a Member of our team, or perhaps a previous membership has expired. Will you help us? There are three ways to do that: as a Member, as a Volunteer or as a Donor. |
|
If you were to become an APA member, then you would then be able to book for any of our Guided Walks for free, and you would also unlock 15% discounts to all the merch in the APA Shop. More importantly, your membership fee (as low as $20 per year for a single concession) would be tangible support for our Park Lands strategies: Explore, Inspire, Protect and Restore. If you were to become a volunteer, there would be a wide range of things you could do to help in one or more of our strategic activities. For example, - becoming a Park Ambassador; and/or
- writing stories for our blog and future editions of this newsletter.
Check out the full range of volunteer options here. |

Is it irony or hypocrisy that the State Government is promising better tree protection while chopping down forests in your Adelaide Park Lands? |
|
|
7. URBAN GREENING STRATEGY |
by Shane Sody How do you develop a greening strategy for a Government that destroys National Heritage-listed forests? As a first step, don’t ignore the elephant in the room.

8. PLEASED TO MEET YOU, JAYNIE |
by Carla Caruso Continuing our series, celebrating those who frequent your Park Lands, we introduce Jaynie Francis-Sandford. The 40-year-old mum and hobbyist photographer from Elizabeth Downs enjoys regular park outings, often accompanied by her young son. But one park, in particular, is the location of a romantic milestone for Jaynie.

9. SHARING SPORTS GROUNDS |
Most of the sports grounds in your Adelaide Park Lands are licensed to either schools, or sports clubs. Every now and then, when the licence period expires, the City Council opens up an Expression of Interest process, encouraging other groups to explore the option of sharing usage of the grounds. That's what's happening now with sports grounds in Park 17 (licenced to Touch Football SA) and in Park 20 (licenced to Pulteney Grammar). |
10. WHAT'S ON IN YOUR PARK LANDS, JUNE 2024 |
by Alex Jones It’s a month filled with events and activities in your Open, Green, Public Adelaide Park Lands. From now until the end of June; explore or discover history, nature, gardens, sport, fitness, or have some family-friendly fun.
