In 30 minutes this Sunday, show the State Government that you Love Your Park Lands and that you have got them “covered” (symbolically) with your umbrella. All you need to do is show up about 1.00pm, to be part of a huge group photo at 1.30.

We’ll help you: one species at a time. Here’s a guide to a plant found alongside the River Torrens / Karrawirra Pari. It’s the common reed: Phragmites australis.

Protecting biodiversity in your Park Lands means more than just protecting the large trees. Loving Your Park Lands requires saving the few re-vegetated patches that provide understorey and vital ecosystems for birds, and insects such as native bees.

We are a grassroots community organisation. We Explore, Inspire, Protect, and Restore.

But we are only as strong as our Members and our Volunteers.

You are receiving the non-members version of this newsletter which means you're not (yet) a Member of our team.

Will you help us to spread the word, to encourage others (especially the State Government!) to Love Your Park Lands ?

There are two ways to do that: as a Member, or as a Volunteer (or both!)

If you were to become an APA member, you would then be able to book for any of our Guided Walks for free, and you would also unlock 15% discounts to all the merch in the APA Shop.

More importantly, your membership fee (as low as $15 per year for a single concession) would be tangible support for our Park Lands strategies:

Explore, Inspire, Protect and Restore.

If you were to become a volunteer, there's a wide range of things you could do to help in one or more of our strategic activities.

10. V8's LIMIT PARK PLANNING

City Council planning for the future of your Victoria Park / Pakapakanthi (Park 16) has been hampered by the State Government's insistence that anachronistic carbon-emission motor sport must take priority in your Park.

To satisfy the State Government's devotion to carbon emission motor racing a new draft plan envisages even more "new bitumen surfaces” within your Park.

11. LAUNCHING GREEN PAKAPAKANTHI

A new neighbourhood re-greening group has kicked off with a day of new plantings in Victoria Park / Pakapakathi (Park 16).

Volunteers who Love Your Park Lands have launched “Green Pakapakanthi” with the blessing of the Adelaide City Council, and would welcome your participation.

The State Government is certainly in no hurry to deal with it; despite recent moves by both the Greens and the Liberal Party in State Parliament.

14. "MEGALITHS": BACK TO THE DRAWING BOARD

It's heartening that most Adelaide City councillors appear to appreciate the distinction between needed upgrades of PUBLIC sports facilities, and co-funding large PRIVATE rooms for functions, meetings and storage.

Plans for a two-storey sports club building on Golden Wattle Park / Mirnu Wirra (Park 21 West) – described by the Lord Mayor as “colossal” – are in doubt as the Council considers withdrawing up to $5m in funding for capital works.

15. ELDER PARK OFF-LIMITS

It could be August 2023 before you are allowed to return to Elder Park in your Adelaide Park Lands.

Irrigation trenching is expected to be completed by the King’s birthday weekend in June, but it will take some time after that before new turf is bedded in.
